Elevated Living, in Helena’s Historic Downtown
About The Iron Front
Constructed in 1888, The Iron Front—known throughout its history as the Templeton Hotel, Windsor House, and Odd Fellows Hall—stands as one of Helena’s most distinctive architectural landmarks. Designed during a period of rapid expansion following the arrival of the railroad in 1883, the building reflects a transformative moment when Helena evolved into a thriving, urban center.
Its defining iron façade, a rare example of prefabricated construction in Montana, embodies the influence of the Chicago School and the forward-looking spirit of the American West. Created by architects Heinlein and Matthias in collaboration with the nearby Steadman Foundry, The Iron Front remains a testament to innovation and craftsmanship at the edge of a growing frontier.
As Helena flourished, so too did the demand for lodging and gathering spaces. The Iron Front replaced the earlier Windsor House and quickly became part of the city’s vibrant downtown fabric—serving travelers, residents, and the broader community alike.
A Legacy of Gathering
In 1915, the building entered a new chapter when it was acquired by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. A significant renovation followed, transforming the fourth floor into an elegant social hall. Completed in 1916, the space featured a grand lodge room with soaring 23-foot ceilings, finely crafted wood interiors, and a spacious banquet hall designed for gatherings of all kinds.
At the heart of this transformation was the ballroom—an expansive space with an oak floor once regarded as among the finest in the West. Over time, this level became one of Helena’s premier social destinations, hosting events, celebrations, and community gatherings that shaped the cultural life of the city.
Today, this storied space is known as The Windsor Ballroom, a name that honors the building’s origins while preserving its role as a place of connection and occasion.

The Next Chapter
The restoration and transformation of the fourth floor marks the next evolution of The Iron Front’s legacy.
The Windsor Collection introduces a limited offering of five private residences within the historic ballroom level—reimagining a space once designed for gathering into one of refined, modern living. This careful conversion preserves the scale, character, and architectural significance of the original design, while bringing new life to one of Helena’s most celebrated interiors.
Just as previous generations adapted The Iron Front to meet the needs of a growing city, this next chapter continues that tradition—honoring the past while creating something enduring for the future.
Alongside the reimagining of the fourth floor, the floors below are being carefully restored to their residential roots. Once home to long- and short-term lodging during Helena’s early growth, these spaces are again becoming apartments—bringing vibrant downtown living back to The Iron Front in a way that honors its original intent.
